David Brems, FAIA, LEED AP
Chairman, AIA Committee on Design
A founding principal of Gillies Stransky Brems Smith and the
2006 Chair of the AIA Committee on Design, David Brems is a
long-time advocate of Environmentally Responsible Design.

Opening Keynote
Reed Kroloff, Dean, Tulane University School of Architecture
Reed Kroloff has been a leader in the effort to rebuild New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina
and Rita. The recipient of the American Academy in Rome’s
2003 Rome Prize Fellowship, Mr. Kroloff previously served as
Editor-in-Chief of Architecture magazine and taught at Arizona
State University. At ASU, he received the first-ever “Award for
Academic Excellence” from the Arizona chapter of the American
Institute of Architects.
Mr. Kroloff writes and lectures widely, and is a regular visiting
critic at architecture schools and professional organizations
across the country. He holds degrees from the University of
Texas at Austin and Yale University, and has practiced architecture in Texas and Arizona. Mr. Kroloff serves on numerous
boards and advisory councils, ranging from the Register of Peer
Professionals of the United States General Services Administration
to the Public Architecture Foundation.

A Discussion with Students
Student winners of the competition for housing in New Orleans
and architecture students from the Universita Iuav di Venezia
Moderator: Professor Giuseppe Longhi, Architecture Faculty,
Universita Iuav di Venezia
Giuseppe Longhi is an associate professor of urban studies at
the Universita Iuav di Venezia with significant scholarly work on
the flood of immigration on the island of Lampedusa.

The Role of Architects in Urban Sustainability: A Panel Discussion
Moderator: Giancarlo Alhadeff, AIA, Studio Alhadeff.
Giancarlo Alhadeff’s practice taps into a creative and professional
background with an international edge. Educated and trained
in the US, he opened his office in Milan, Italy in 1991. Commercial
and residential work in Turkey and the Far East enhance his practice in Europe. His unique vantage point stimulates an
active dialogue about the most pressing issues in the architectural
arena today: design and sustainability, professionalism and
responsiveness to client needs. He is the AIA’s representative to
the Architects Council of Europe.

• Aaron Betsky, Director, Netherlands Architecture
Institute
Aaron Betsky is the director of the Netherlands Architecture
Institute in Rotterdam, and one of the most important critics
and proponents of architectural discourse today. Born in
Montana, his experience as an architect, critic, curator, educator,
lecturer, and writer on architecture and design have
positioned Betsky as one of the 21st-century’s architectural
power brokers. In November 2006 he will become director
of the Cincinnati Museum of Art.
• Jane da Mosto, The Venice in Peril Fund
An environmental scientist, Jane da Mosto studied at Oxford
University and Imperial College (London) before moving to
Venice in 1995. She is co-author of “The Science of Saving
Venice” (Allemandi, 2004), the fruit of a collaboration with
Cambridge University supported by the Venice in Peril Fund
on Environmental Challenges for Venice and its Lagoon:
State of Knowledge.
• Thomas Vonier, FAIA, RIBA, Thomas Vonier Architect Inc.
Thomas Vonier was founding president of AIA Continental
Europe and served as the AIA liaison to the Architects’
Council of Europe. He led groundbreaking research on the
security of US foreign mission buildings and serves on the
board of directors for the Institute for Research and Study
in Urban Security (IRSUS) in Europe.

Clifford Pearson
Clifford Pearson is a deputy editor of Architectural Record and a
vice commissioner for the U.S. Pavilion at the 10th International
Venice Architecture Biennale. He is editor of the book Modern
American Houses and the author of Indonesia: Design and
