After the Flood: Building on Higher Ground Venice Biennale 2006 10th International Architecture Exhibition U.S. Pavilion - Giardini di Castello, Venice, Italy September 10– November 19, 2006 |
|||
After the Flood: Building on Higher Ground offers a range of architectural responses to the August 2005 devastation in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Developing a sustainable architecture in a region historically prone to hurricanes and flooding will require more than simply reconstructing the city; it will demand rethinking the relationship between architecture and the natural environment. Understanding the unique local conditions of New Orleans will be fundamental to defining a realistic future for the city, but international knowledge exchange, technology sharing, and collaboration is going to be key in responding to global environmental challenges. After the Flood focuses on proposals for both multifamily and single-family housing, and is drawn from an international competition organized by Architectural Record with Tulane University’s School of Architecture. Christian Ditlev Bruun, Curator |
